Notes
3/28/1798 - Inherited 19 acres in Woodstock VT from his mother. This was from her 'third' of the 1000 acres bought by Joab Hoisington. 1
' Ebeneasor and Zeb went to marrietta Ohio in very early time they had to pack there goods on horses they have raised large families they are scattered reaching all over the western part of the western states.' (Letter from A.J. Hoisington to Lyman Draper, 1879) [Note: This may actually refer to Joab (II) and Barzava Zebulon, who were both in what became Athens Co. OH by 1804. 2,3
According to 'Vol. II, Thurs. July 23, 1801 No. 66: Harzava Horsington (aged 19) was at Waterford, Washington Co. (OH). Pioneer Ohio Newspaper, 1793-1810. A list of letters was published, left at the post office in Chillicothe.4
Listed in OH state census (1803) as Barzava Hossington in Waterford Township, Washington Co., OH5
Property 6,7:
March 10 1817 Harrington Barzava From Bridge Bazaliel 3 190 13 6 25 131
This is described as "west half of fraction NE twenty-five, and is part of the mile square NE twenty in the township NE in 13th range" and was sold for $300.
This is the first mention of Barzava in the Athens Co/Washington Co OH deeds, although he must have bought the property at an earlier date. The Ohio Company records show that original patentees of this land were Porter and P_______ and there is no record of a sale directly to Barzava.
Photograph of deed taken 060804.
Property 6,8:
Feb 2 1821 Hoisington Barzava From Cutler Ephraim 5 36 13 6 27/28 24
This land, which may have been purchased from a relative as there were a couple of Hoisington women married to Cutlers about this time, is described as 162 acres "lying in sections 27 and 28 of township 6th of the 13th range", and was bought for $250. Witnessed by Samuel G. Brown and John Brown.
It says it was "recorded in Vol 1, pages 253,254 and 255", probably in the Ohio Company Records, although I did not find the record (or those page numbers) in the Ohio Company Records in Marietta OH.
Property 9:
Barzava bought 62 acres of land in Ames Twp., Athens, OH.
13 Mar 1822 (age 47) bought 62 acres from Richard and Sally Hill;
Marriage:
"The State of Ohio, Athens Co. ss} I hereby certify that I joined together in the bonds of wedlock Berzava Hoisingten & Mahala Sloter, Ames 11 April 1822 M. Boyle, JP"
From "Athens County, Ohio Marriages 1821-1822":
ARLINGTON, Bazzava to Mahala STALER (STATER) 11 Apr 1822
(Found by Pixie on the FTM CD, Ohio Vital Records #1, 1790'2-1870's. It's based on the book 'Gateway to the West' published originally by The Genealogical Publishing Company.)
The marriage was performed by J. Bojus, J.P., Ames Twp., Athens Co. OH. Barzava was 40 years old at this time. This runs counter to the family pattern which was that they men were between 20 and 25. Could he have had a previous marriage? During his 20s, he may have been in the Waterford Twp area of Washington County OH, but no record was found in a search of early marriage records.
The marriage license was returned and recorded. The entry reads "Barzava Hoisington & Mahala Sloter, deliv'd Rec'd Hill"
Property 9:
Nov 24 1827 Hoisington Barzava To Wolf Jacob 6 483 13 6 35 62
Property 6,10:
On the same date he sold the above property, he bought 112 acres (also in Ames Twp) from Jacob Boarman, who was probably a relative on his mother's side.
Nov 24 1827 Hoisington Barzava From Boarman Jacob 6 286 13 6 22 23 112
Census 6,11:
Listed as Bezaby Hysetton on Page 223 of 1830 Census for Ames Twp., Athens Co, OH
2 boys under 5
2 boys 5-10
1 man 50-59
1 girl under 5
1 girl 5-10
1 woman 20-29
Property 6:
He sold the following property:
Jun 12 1834 Hoisington Berzabia To Amos Hixon 6 486 13 6 16 120
Listed in the 1835 Ohio Tax Books (however, he was previously reported by Harry Hoisington to have died 1834).
Athens Co., Athens Twnshp, Tax type 7, page 117 Athens Co., Ames Twnship,
Tax type C, p 11 (from Lou Tharp)
Burial:
There are 7 unmarked graves at the site of what was a Hoisington homestead in Ames Twp., Athens County OH. It is possible that Barzava is buried there.
