Military:
Eli enlisted at Keokuk IA on 28 Oct 1863 in the Co. H 4th IA Cavalry. Apparently, he went to town on an errand for his mother and was talked into signing up for the army by a local recruiter, who would not let him go home to tell his mother. His letters to his mother (and hers to the government) were included in his mother's application for a pension.
Death:
Died at 16 of diptheria and rheumatism in training camp (civil war).
