I am seeking information of Charles Edward RHOADES b. 1855 in Missouri he married Mary Emmogene HORN (b. 1854 in MO). They moved to Towanka, Kay Co., and raised a family. Their daughter, Mable Maude RHOADES (b. 1881, d.1960) married a Benjamin Harvey WILLIAMS (b. 1875 Blue Rapids, Marshall Co., KS., d. 1914). It is believed the Rhoades and Horn lived in the area of Cherry Box, Shelby Co., MO before they moved to OK around 1860-1865. Any information on the forefathers of these families would be greatly enjoyed.

Thank you, Howard M. Rhoades

I'm looking for any info on Charles and Essie Lamb. We know that they lived in Creek County in 1920, from a census. Then moved back to Kay County, to Ponca City. Essie, her son and one of her daughters in buried in the Oddfellows Cemetery but Charles isn't there. We have no idea of his where abouts. My mother said they lived in the "Turkey Creek" area of Ponca. Out off of South Ave. around where the Blue Moon is now. Would you see if you have any record of them, Please. And can you tell me how I can find where he was buried and where he died? My Mom sent off for a death certificate, but not knowing where and when he died, we weren't able to get one. Thank you for your time.

I'm searching for information on, and desire contact with any descendants of my paternal Aunt who has links to Kay County and the surrounding area. My Aunt was Maggie (Margaret) Hoffman and she was the oldest child of Charles Wesley Hoffman and S.J. "Lou" (maiden name Doyle) Hoffman. She was born about 1880, probably in Missouri. Following her in the family was my Father, John Thomas Hoffman - born 1882 in Pierce City, Lawrence County, Missouri; next was Charles Linsley Hoffman - born 1883 - place unknown; and finally Nannie Hoffman - date and place of birth unknown. The father and mother both were deceased by 1894 when the family lived in Arkansas City. Maggie married Samuel T. Harris about 1897 - place unknown. They lived in Kaw Township, Kay County in 1910. Sam and Maggie had one child - Faye L. Harris born about 1904 - probably in Oklahoma or Cowley County, Kansas. Sam Harris was killed by lightning in 1915 at Red Rock, Oklahoma. The next year Maggie married Eugene Arthur McCall in Perry, Oklahoma. She appears in the Kay County Civil Court Records in Feb 1917 when she filed suit against her deceased husband's brother Bert Harris, while living at Billings, Oklahoma. Maggie departed the area in the 1930's and contact with descendants of any named persons is desired.

I'm interested in learning anything I can about my biological maternal grandfather - and family. I don't know alot about him, except his name was Ernest Kohler. My mother, Patsy Ruth, was born to him and my grandmother, Ruth Morrison Overton, in Ponca City on July 28, 1928. I don't know how much older Ernest was than my grandmother, but assume they might have been somewhere around the same age. I think my grandmother was young when she had my Mom; she must have been born between 1908 and 1910. Ernest died at a young age, maybe 35 or so. I am also assuming that my grandfather, Ernest, and grandmother, Ruth, were married, although I don't know that for sure either. I would love to have any information you could share with me!

Thank you, and best regards,

Karen (Douglas) Whaley

My grandfather told me before he passed, that he was born just outside what is now Blackwell, OK, in a tent among an oil-booming field in Feb. of 1910. He lived his life without a certification of birth. It was only when he was in his later years that he had to research and asked for this info to receive his S.S. pension. I have his death certificate and obits.

He had worked in the OK & TX oilfields and the building of roads in the Depression. He had a brother and 2 sisters. He told stories of his childhood and schooling in Blackwell and of his grandmother (may be honorary) that lived with them, that was a non-English-speaking Native American.

I am looking for the Adams family who lived in Kay county in the early 20's-30's and after. There should be living relatives somewhere. Rolla Oliver Adams had brothers John and Guy and sister Maude. All three boys were in WWI.

Rolla was married to Priscilla and they had a grandaughter Peggy Ellen Adams, who might still be living. Rolla was on the city council of Kaw. He died in Kaw in 1938 and was transported to Pawnee county for burial.

John and Guy were listed as brothers. Guy lived until the 1960's. He might be burried at Kaw. Guy never married and ran pool halls in various towns. I know nothing about John except he was living at Kaw when Rolla died.

Maude married a Thomas and was living in Pawnee county early 1900's

The parents of the four kids were Robert B Adams and Emily Brannan.

Lavinia Jane Carter. Lavinia Jane was born in Clairborn County, Tennessee, in 1823. She died January 1915 in Farmington, Washington and is buried in Oklahoma. She and her husband Greenbury or Greenberry Lawson, married April 16, 1844, were the parents of SARAH ANNE*, Thomas, Serana, Nancy Jane, Matilda Elizabeth, and twins who died at birth, Lawson. Her sister Permelia, b. 1827 Virginia d. 5/5/1932 Putnam county, Missouri, married the brother of Greenbury Lawson, Henry Harrison Lawson on 8/4/1852 in Davis County, Iowa. Lavinia and Greenbury lived a colorful life that included homesteading their way across America. My records, unproven, indicate Lavinia Jane and Permelia A. Carter were the daughters of John Carter. I have no birth or death date for him nor their mother's name. Please write me if you have any information regarding this family or clues as to directions I might take with my research.

Thanks, Joan

The family member that I have talked with says that she talked to Loretta often until several years ago. Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

I'm looking for a death certificate, obituary or cemetery transcript for Hazel (Gladden) STURGIS, born abt 1901 in Iowa, died after June 1982 in Blackwell, Kay Co, OK. I'd also be interested in any information on her husband or children, but I don't know their names. Hazel moved from Iowa to Minnesota and then to Dakota while a child. I then lost track of her until she is mentioned on her brother's obituary as living in Blackwell in 1982. The obit spells her married name as STURGIS, but obits have a tendency to err on spelling, so it might be a variation, or even STURGEON.

I do not have much to go on, & I tried going through the state of Oklahoma for a birth certificate for Letha Lattin. The story goes that Miles & Kate Lattin lived in Kaw City Oklahoma & had one daughter & two sons. Miles died in 1901 & Kate went to Illinois & gave her daughter (Letha Lattin) up for adoption. I have a picture of her that was taken before she was adopted, it is stamped with the photograper "Kanden, 204 E Douglas Ave., Wichita Kansas. Not much was mentioned over the years about Letha's parents other than she was Native American & was from Kaw City. I have Letha's birthdate as 12/8/1899. I was told that someone found Miles Lattin's grave in Blackburn Oklahoma & no one knew who put a grave marker on it & that they spelled Lattin with only one t. I was also told that that they were from England. I would appreciate ANY information that anyone could provide to me on Miles death or the birth of Letha.

Also, my grandfather Charles, nicknamed "Choc" Collins and my grandmother Blanche Mae Deer Collins lived in Ponca City in the 1930's. Any information on them would be appreciated.

Hi, I'm looking for information on my Martin family line. I know my Grandfather's name is James Harry Martin, b Jan 6, 1886 d Mar 3, 1945. He was married to Martha Mae Fields, b Feb 24, 1901 d June 5, 1978. They are both buried in the Newkirk Oklahoma cemetary. I was told that James Harry Martin and also his wife Martha Mae were both from sets of twins. I can go back to the Fields side for the twin and other information but I am at a stand still for information on the Martin side. Information that anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. I've heard the Martins are a very complicated family line to track.

Thank you, Brenda

Mary Ellen WINGER (Oshel) - my grandmother. born in 1927 in Tonkawa, but no birth records to be found anywhere. I've been told she was born on an indian reservation there, but the information I've found on the Tonkawa nation seems to indicate that around that time there were under 100 left, so I don't see how she could be a member. were there many white families living on reservations at that time?

Hoping to find my missing great aunt, Janet Taylor Liddle Webster, and/or her husband, Joseph E. Webster. Unlike most people, who seem to want to dig down into their roots as far back as Adam and Eve if possible, I want to find some living relatives. Janet Taylor Liddle (Jessie) was my Grandfather's only sister. None of his brothers married or had children. Until I began digging around in my roots I didn't even know he had a sister. I've found lots of relatives no one ever mentioned. I WANT THEM. Where did they go? Did they have children? Do I have cousins out there? So far I've found a few on my mother's side. So that's my problem and my search. Any suggestions about how I should proceed? Any and all ideas gratefully accepted.

The JOHN BOWEN SMITH Family settled in Kay County, Oklahoma, at the time of the Cherokee Strip land run, or shortly thereafter.  The Family consisted of J[ohn] BOWEN SMITH (b. 1846 in Springfield, OH), his wife, NANCIE E. SUMMERS SMITH (b. 1856 in Virginia).  They were married at Clearwater, Kansas in 1874, and their first child, THOMAS E. SMITH was born 12/05/1874 and died in Kay County, in 1948.  Thomas E Smith and wife Lennie, were buried in the Kaw City Cemetery. Three girls were born thereafter, MARGARET MAE - - (b.1883), ANOR PEARL - - (b. 1876), and AGNES J. - - (born 1878, in Iowa).

The family lived in western Kansas during the 1880s, at Garden City and Leoti, where Bowen was engaged in business, part of which envolved gathering buffalo bones for fertilizer and bone handles for untensiles.

The Girls' families (Sprague, Thomas/Madsen, and Switzer, lived in Grant County, OK) maintained contact over the years, but contact has been lost with the children of THOMAS E. SMITH.  Would like to make contact and compare family stories.

I have followed Charles J. PECKHAM from Providence, R.I. through his Civil War promotions from sargeant to colonel and his law practice in Princeton, IL and Sedan, KS because he stood as mentor in Sedan, KS to a fatherless William Samuel Fitzpatrick, who became a prominent Kansas lawyer, scholar of indian government, legislator, and oilman and rose to national prominence with Prairie Oil and the Oil Company manipulations in 1932-36. I found mention of Ed L. PECKHAM as his sole heir in a 1911 Chautauqua Co Affadavit by W.S. Fitzpatrick. Naturally, I'd like to follow up on Ed L. since he too seems to have been resourceful and successful man.

I am looking for information on JANET TAYLOR LIDDLE WEBSTER (Jessie), born on Jan 4, 1869 in Leith, Midlothian, Scotland, moved to Churchill, OH in 1871 with her family, married to one JOSEPH E. WEBSTER (date and place unknown), and living in or near Ponca City, Kay Co, OK in 1908.

I'll take any leads or suggestions. Cemeteries? Birth records? Death records? Census data? How do I research those from here in Pennsylvania?

What I really want is cousins. My grandfather and Jessie were the only of their siblings who married. I've tracked down everyone else. Jessie alone is a complete unknown to me.

I'm seeking Info on my GG grandmother Mary Elizabeth Boyce Lewis who died in Kay Co, Ponco City, Ok 16 Aug 1941. She was born in Burnet Co Tx 23 Aug 1857 and was the daughter of Issac Ely Boyce and Catherine Caroline Wilkins.

Her husband LL Lewis died in route from their home in Mont to visit relatives in OK in 1923. He died in Arkansas City, Ks and is was buried in the soldiers cemetary there. He was a vet of the Civil War as well as the indian wars of the late 60's and early 70's in the bighorn area.

I believe that she moved in with relatives in the Kay Co area after her husbands death and remained there until her own death when she was laid to rest next to her husband.

I'm especially seeking photo's of Mary and her husband LL. I have no idea who she was living with at the time of her death. The Obit of her husbands death said they had 2 sons living in Kay Co, Damon and Seth Lewis. I have also found info that says she lived in a home for veterans wives.

I'm hoping there may still be relatives living in the area who may have these photos. I presently have a photo of Mary when she was quite old but nothing of LL. I have another of her as a child with her parents and family which I'm more than happy to share with anyone interested.

I would appreciate any help and my thanks in advance,

JD McCoy.

I will be making a visit to Newkirk OK around the end of June and would like to find out some information before I make that trip from Florida.

I am trying to find the location of my grandparents' farm. Their names were Abram Frey and Matilda (or Tillie) Kreider Frey.

They went to the Newkirk area from Sterling IL somewhere around 1904-1905 and left Newkirk around 1911-1913.  I have been told that they either bought or homesteaded a farm.

How would I go about finding the location of this farm?  Is there a volunteer who goes to the county courthouse and looks up the deed information?  I would be willing to pay someone to do this for me.

Thank you very much,

Ginny Traycik

In researching my GG-Grandfather, Monroe DAVIS d 3-27-34 at Blackwell,DESSA from the public library was able to help me find an obit! Yaaayand many thanks to Dessa! She further advised me to contact ROBERTS&SONS Funeral Home, which I did......but unfortunately, I was told that they didn't begin saving their hard records until 1935.....nothing on Monroe Davis in 1934, though Roberts Chapel performed the services....

I was hopeful to find the funeral records of Monroe in 1934, but I am more desperate to find records or obit of his wife, Sarah (McHenry) DAVIS, who died in 1912. I keep thinking her obit or record holds many clues to their 5 children who died before 1900 and possibly clues to her MCHENRY family.

Since both Monroe & Sarah died in Blackwell and their services were held there, I hope to find something, but where? Both bodies were taken to Ames Cemetery in Ames, OK for burial after Blackwell services. From the stone of Sarah in Ames, I know only that she died in 1912. From family story, it is believed her death occurred in the winter. That is as much as I know. I tried Ames for info and now Blackwell....bummed.

Any advice or direction would be GREATLY appreciated.

I am researching the Hannegan and Steele families that settled on homesteads in the Eddy and Retta areas. Thomas Hannegan claimed land for a townsite in 1893 (Cherokee Run) in what is now known as Osbourne,Grant County I believe. When the eventual townsite of Eddy located 1 1/2 mi to the west, he turned the property over to his nephew, Wm. 'Daniel' Hannegan. Daniel Hannegan married Eva May Steele, daughter of Silas Wesley Steele of Retta, Kay County where they raised their children into adulthood. The homestead was sold to the Ann Belle Muegge in 1939.

Children of Daniel and May Hannegan:

Glenn Wesley Hannegan; Dee William Hannegan; Harry Steele Hannegan; Velma Lucy Hannegan; Marguerette Lillian Hannegan; and Roger Eugene Hannegan.

I am the daughter of Glenn, and am now residing in Alberta, Canada. I am interested in locating any family members of this family in order to compare information. I am particularly interested in Uncle Tom Hannegan (Thomas). I believe Tom was married to Mary Britte of Oklahoma and they had 2 or 3 children, one of whom was married to a Mr. Bronke and lived close to Blackwell. Any information of this family would be gratefully received and information shared.

I am looking for ANY information about BREDE HUGHES. My paternal grandfather had a sister mentioned in his obituary. He died in 1957 in Iowa. She was listed at that time as living in Nardin OK. My research has found that she was born in 1881 so she would have been 76 yrs old in 1957. I am assuming that Brede was her husband's name as she was listed as Mrs. Brede Hughes. Help! I would appreciate ANY information that anyone could provide to me.

My GG-Grandfather was Monroe DAVIS. He lived at Blackwell from abt 1910 until his death there in March 1934. His Undertaker from Blackwell was J.R. ROBERTS. Monroe was taken to Ames, OK (Major County) for burial at the Ames Cemetery. I would like to obtain Funeral & Burial Records, andan Obit. Any direction would be appreciated.

Monroe's wife was Sarah (MC HENRY) DAVIS, who died at Blackwell in 1912. I would like to obtain her Funeral Records and Obituary, but I have no idea where to go. I also have no exact date of death, complicating matters further. She was buried at Ames Cemetery in Ames, OK and her stone reads 1912.

Monroe & Sarah DAVIS had a foster/adopted daughter, named Alva M. BIRCHFIELD, who attended school at Blackwell. Per census, she was 16 in 1910. I believe she would have graduated abt 1912 or 1913. Can anyone tell me about school records for Blackwell, Kay County?

Alva married to Elmer H. BRADFORD who was a plumber in Blackwell for many years and had his own business. They had 3 children, Harry, Birdenia and Onis BRADFORD. Elmer and Alva (BIRCHFIELD) BRADFORD died at Bethany and are buried at Kay County. I am interested in any further BRADFORD info.

Best Wishes,

I am looking for information about Ransom David WINFIELD. Possibly born in New York in 1857, he had a hardware store in Blackwell, Kay Co., Oklahoma before 1890. His father was William WINFIELD, born in 1816 in New York.

Ransom David WINFIELD married Emily SCURR, daughter of Thomas SCURR of London England, and they had two sons, Ransom D. WINFIELD born in 1890, and Richard WINFIELD, who was born in Latham, Butler Co., KS, in 1896.

Richard WINFIELD is survived by his son Richard WINFIELD, born in Wichita, KS in 1925, and a grandson, Kenneth WINFIELD, born in Los Angeles, CA in 1959.

Luther BISSELL and family entered Kay Co. prior to the 1900 Census and settled on school land in Weston Twp for a few years before removing to E. Lincoln ST. in Blackwell. Before then they reportedly helped build Prairie Chapel nearby. I'd like to hear from anyone who may know where the church's original records may be. I'd like to confirm the report. I, also, would like to know the current address of the church if anyone knows it. Thanks much!

Also, my family history says my great grandfather, Charles Anthony CONNER (name changed from O'Connor) was a sheriff in Tonkawa. This probably would have been somewhere between 1895-1925. Charley and his wife, Laura, lived on a farm just outside of Lamont with their children, Lial, Viola, Leila, Dewey, Orville and Alice. I can't find anything to substantiate Grandpa being a sheriff. Does anyone have info on that?

I am hoping someone on your list will recognize one of the following names as one of their ancestors who made the Cherokee Strip Run in 1893: John Calvin WARD and Lizzie CARR Ward. The settled in Newkirk and remained there for many years. Lizzie is listed as having been buried in the Newkirk Cemetery in 1959. I have not yet found when Calvin died, or where he is buried. Please contact me via e-mail if you have knowledge of these people. Thank you very much. Sincerely,

I am looking for information on my gg grandfather Samuel Spillman Snyder who resided in Blackwell, Oklahoma from 1900 until his death in February of 1934. His wife Sarah Ellen Johson Snyder also resided there until her death on 24 Oct. 1924. Sarah was brought back to Iowa for burial, but as far as anyone knows Samuel was buried there. There was also a daughter, her married name was Mattie Karns.

I am looking for burial and obituary information. On the website it states there were few funeral homes in the area. If you could point me in the right direction, I would very much appreciate it.

There is a neat story that goes along with this. When Samuel and Sarah went to Oklahoma, in 1900, my g gparents George and Sarah Ellis also went with their children, my grandfather Jesse and his brother Chester. Samuel was supposedly to have ran a large hotel and cattle ranch. My grandfather remembers playing with the indian children along the river, supposedly a river that would have separated the reservation. In a few years Sarah and the children came back to Iowa, but George stayed for a while. It is said that he was making candy, around Christmastime and an indian was there, George need sugar and the indian brought him the sugar, and they shared the candy.

Thanks so much,

The family was separated when the mother became ill. M.D. (known as Dan) McPherson is my grandfather and I would like to find his sister's family. Help! I was told that someone found Miles Lattin's grave in Blackwell Oklahoma & no one knew who put a grave marker on it & that they spelled Lattin with only one t. I was also told that that they were from England. I would appreciate ANY information that anyone could provide to me.

I am looking for anyone with information on the RUSCO family that moved to Kay county in the late 1800's. Also possible surname MYERS.

I am trying to locate information about my father, Patrick Virgil "Pat" Taylor. My father was born in Kaw City, Oklahoma, on March 6, 1924, at least that is the family legend. He died in Chicago in the month of December 1976. He was part American Indian, possibly Apache,

He had a brother named Ed who I actually met in Los Angeles in 1983 or 1984. Family legend is that he also had two sisters, and one of them might have been named Barbara Ellen Taylor because he named my sister Barbara Ellen Taylor. His mother was Indian and supposedly Apache. She died when Pat was quite young, and his father was killed in an accident in Arizona (family legend is that he was run down by a greyhound bus) when Pat was only 6 or 8. Family legend is that he was adoptedīand raised by a Mexican family in Arizona after his father's death. I am not sure how Pat wound up in Arizona at age 8, except that his father might have moved there to find work. This would have been 1930, the beginning of the great depression. I also do not know the name of the Mexican family in Arizona that raised Pat from age 8. My mother (Paula Truth Beall) and father met in Needles, CA in 1947 and were married that year, later moving to Cave City, Kentucky, and Chicago (1956 ).

I would appreciate any information .
