E-mails from Robert Corkins 1/2002:
"I was reading your Hosington Surname Index. You show Melissa Lucina Hoisington, daughter of Joab Hoisington and Huldah (Halle) Boomer, marrying a William Carey. She actually married, Walter J. Carey, 22 March 1844, Hillsdale Co, Michigan. She died in Fargo, Cass Co, North Dakota, 12 September 1897.Walter J. Carey, Born 21 October 1816, New York. He died 1879, Carson City, Ormsby Co, Nevada.
Walter and Melissa had two children:
(1) - Albert Lovellen Carey - born Clinton, Lenawee Co, Michigan and died Spokane, Spokane Co, Washington 1 October 1906.(2) - Ruth Agnes Carey - born Adrain, Lenawee Co, Michigan, 19 August 1850. Died Hollywood, Los Angeles Co, California, 13 December 1919.
Walter J. Carey and Melissa Lorene Hoisington are my wife's gr. gr. grandparents.
Sincerely
Robert E. Corkins"
"Family tradition states that Walter J. Carey practiced law when he was young. After they discovered gold in California, Walter left home and went to the gold fields. He more or less deserted his family. He would return home once in a while but would return to the gold fields. Melissa probably followed her children to Fargo, North Dakota. Both children lived in North Dakota for some time. Albert Lovellen was involved in North Dakota politics. He was asked to run for governor but declined.I am not sure how long Melissa stayed in Michigan while Walter was in Nevada. He would come home once in awhile but would leave for Nevada again. Apparently the children were raised by their mother because their father was gone most of the time."
