Husband's Notes
207 John (who married Dorcas Gabriel) is the second son of WilliamBlackwood and Rebecca Boileau. He was born in Ireland in 1779, died Dec. 16, 1862 and buried at the Union Church Cemetery.
His parents emigrated to America when he was about nine or eleven years of age (1787-1789) and evidently settled in Cumberland County, PA, for he often referred to Carlisle (county seat of Cumberland Co.) east of the mountains when relating of his early life. The 1790 US Census lists a William Blackwood and family of six children--five boys and one girl--as
living there at that timeand it is reasonable to believe that it was of that family. The PA Archives show that James, John, and William Blackwood resided within the bounds of the Cumberland County Militia--1790-1800--also that William Blackwood served as a private in Company A of Volunteers, Aug. 29, 1814 to Jan. 4, 1815. The marriage record of the First Presbyterian Church of Carlisle shows that William Blackwood and Rebecca Boileau were married, Mar. 26, 1812.
It is not definately known when, but he left Cumberland Co. and moved westward to Belmont Co., OH, where he lived for some time. He spoke of driving a "Coach and Four" on the National Pike, also of hauling merchandise between Wheeling WV and other neighboring towns.
In 1838, he, his brother George and his wife's brother, John Boileau, together with their families, pushed on westward to Athens Co. OH, where he, William. purchased a farm located about three miles west of the town of Athens (County Seat of Athens Co.) on Factory Creek and the Baltimore and Ohio Ry. George Blackwood lived on a farm north of that of his
brothers' for a time but later moved on to Chillicothe, OH, where they disappeared. One brother was left in Belmont Co.--died and was buried there.
Besides raising their own family of nine children--six boys and three girls--William and Rebecca raised an adopted daughter whose parents came from England when it took many months to make the voyage and this girl was born on the ocean. After arriving in this country, the father deserted the mother and she lost her mind soon after and the child was left with her grandparents who seemed to be friends of the Blackwoods, and who later adopted her.
William and Rebecca Blackwood, all of their children, many grandchildren and at least four great-grandchildren are buried in Union Church Cemetery located about five miles west of Athens, OH.
